Help from Probiotics in Foods
Crestina Chavez of the Austin News tells about a great success story of a woman by the name of Danette Dulaney who is one of millions of women living with irritable bowel syndrome. "I would be in the store and I would have to rush to the bathroom, not knowing if I was going to make it or not," Dulaney said. She tried allopathic medicine, but did not work for her. "I didn't like the way they made me feel. I didn't like the grogginess, so I ended up not taking them." That's when her doctor told her about probiotics, also known as friendly bacteria.
Could eating bacteria be good for you?
There are those that agree... but can foods enriched with probiotics or so-called friendly bacteria really keep you healthy? asks Chavez.
Here are some facts .... more than 150 probiotic products have hit stores in the U.S. By the year 2010, probiotic food is projected to be a $1 billion a year business. Research shows the bugs' benefits aren't limited to the gut. Some studies show they can boost the immune system, reduce bladder cancer recurrence, treat yeast infections and ease allergies.
"Many studies show they replenish the gut with beneficial bacteria that aid in the absorption of nutrients and regeneration in the intestinal tract," says Dr. Jane Sadler with Baylor Medical Center.
"I am not having to take my allergy medicine anymore," Dulaney says ... and that she doesn't need to wait for more research, she's knows she's found her favorite cup of bugs.
